Our Work

Project 2: Tectonics: Material, Anthropometric and Ergonomic Exploration -Isolation Structure

In Project 2, we were required to create an isolation structure for ourselves . We experimented with a variety of materials and learnt about their nature and features, as well as how to integrate them in our design to convey our own experience during the pandemic.

01

Design Intention

To create a safe and secure meditation space that evokes a sense of tranquility and mindfulness.

02

Design process development & sketches

During the design process, I looked back at project 1 and decided to adopt the geometrical shapes from the tattoos and ultimately came to exploring forms in pentagon shapes.

Conceptual Design

The design element applied is point and lines as direction, weight, and characters of the line can convey different states of emotions and can evoke various reactions in a design. Layering and twisting was implemented which add to the depth of the isolation structure. The form is also inspired by a blooming lotus and a meditation pose with the arms stretched upwards.

Sketch Model

I made a couple of sketch models and experimented with different modelling materials such as balsa wood and PVC modelling board to visualize the tectonics of the structure.

Final Model

UNPLUG

“UNPLUG” is an isolation structure that accomodates to the banal action, “padmasana” which is a meditation pose that I practise during the self-isolation period to instill mindfulness. Through meditation, I’m able to focus on my awareness of the experience of nature through sight, sound, touch and smell. The semi-enclosed capsule enables me to “unplug” from constant noises and distractions which shifts my attention solely to my thoughts. Accompanied by the lingering aroma of cedarwood , the isolation structure further enhances the sensory experience in the intimate atmosphere. The form resembles a lotus bud which is gradually blooming.

Reflection

I've learnt about the properties of various materials through thorough research and how materiality affects the sensorial experience of the user. Moreover, I've experimented with geometric forms and integrate them into my pandemic experience.
