Investigation of Urban Space

This assignment consists of two parts, namely part A and part B. In general, we are required to carry out an investigation of several components in a city through virtual platforms such as google earth and compile them into 2 A2 sized posters on canva.

In part A, we're required to present the difference between urban, suburban and rural areas in several aspects in an infographic manner.

In part B, we're required to present an infographic case study of an assigned urban space and focus on the 5 aspects according to Kevin's Lynch book, "Image of the city"

The urban space that we've been assigned to is La Rambla, Barcelona. My group consists of Kimberly Yong, Chang Shi Pei, Jaylene Tan, Andrew Wong and I (Voon Ming Yee).

Week 10-11

We started out by coming up with sepcific locations for  urban, suburban and rural areas for part A. We decided to have Kuala Lumpur City Center to be our urban area, Taman Dato Ahmad Razali as our suburban area and Kampung Pachitan as our rural area. I did my part of research on   the cultural and activities aspect of every area whereas the other members did the rest of the research.

After we're done with the research, Shi Pei compiled the information into a canva poster. Followed by, we proceeded to do our research on part B which is La Rambla, Barcelona.

Week 12-13

In Part B, I was assigned to do research on the historical background of the urban space , building typology, zoning, main accessibility and key plan. I also produced a map which consists of sun paths, wind paths and zoning of the urban space. After everyone is done with their part, Shi Pei arranged our sorted our information into a canva poster.

During the tutorial sessions, we were given feedbacks on our posters such as loosening up the layout for the second board and allocate more space for the infrastructure aspect for the first board.

Week 14

Lastly, we did several final touch ups to the map to make it stand out in the poster. Moreover, Shi Pei and the team coordinated to sort out the layout of the poster and showed it to Mr Paul for final checking.

We made our final amendments to the poster by removing the background picture which took too much space and enlarged the exploding maps to emphasize on the Kevin Lynch's five elements.

OUTCOME

REFLECTION

6579076_orig.png

In this assignment, I've learnt to apply theoretical lessons into practical assignments such as identifying the zoning of the area, infrastructures and building typologies of the places.

Moreover, I've also learnt to conduct independent learning by reading up on Kevin Lynch's "Image of the city" and identify the five elements in the urban space, namely nodes, landmarks, edges, path and district.

Besides, we've also brainstormed for interesting layouts and obtain inspirations from pinterest to be applied to our posters.

As a group, we learnt how to share and discuss about our ideas efficiently through online platforms such as zoom meetings. In addition, we also followed our leader's directions and helped each other whenever there's any issues or difficulties,
